“Phonological awareness is the ability to hear, identify and say the separate parts of words such as rhymes, and letter sounds. Phonological awareness has been shown in numerous studies to be one of the best predictors of initial reading progress.” – www.fivefromfive.com.au
Knowing this, I made Phonological Awareness the focus of my literacy program in Term 1 of Prep and it continues to be a key focus through the year with activities readily available on our Phonological Awareness trolley!! These activities are separated into skills and my children are grouped according to what they need to work on. In term 1 we did these activities as a whole class. Now this trolley…. it goes out each morning for parent helpers to stay and work with the kids! Want to set one up for your classroom? I’ve got you….

Firstly, you need to know where your kids are at! This checklist from Tam @learningwiththehive is awesome! I worked with the children in my class one-on-one and assessed where their gaps were. I grouped them according to these gaps and wrote their names on the group cards on activity tubs… more about the group cards later!
Now for the activities! I chose resources that could be used in small groups, were easy to explain to a parent helper and could be stored easily. Some are from my website and some are from other awesome creators. The best bit is, you can easily change out the activities to keep the selection interesting! Here’s what is in there at the moment… they’re all linked so you can check them out!
Syllables
Rhyming
Sounds (Beginning, Middle and Final Sounds)
Blending and Segmenting
Decoding – these guys are ready to start reading!
If you’re wanting some others activities to change things up, then check out our Phonological Awareness section
The Trolley
Now for the trolley! All the bits are from Kmart (of course!) I actually ordered the wrong trolley ♀️ so I’ll link both for you
And you can download the adorable tags for FREE!!
Once our parent helpers are finished in the morning, the trolley then becomes an intervention set for our older grades and a fast finisher activity space in class!!
When the children have mastered their phonological awareness they move onto Phonics Activities!! I have all those ready to go, in levels, in this pack!!!
Let me know if you have any questions and tag me on instragram @stayclassyclassrooms if you set up your own trolley! I can’t wait to see!
