Not only is The Very Hungry Caterpillar an amazing book (because it is!) that allows itself to extend on so many different ideas, there’s always one that I love to set up and that’s watching a real life butterfly hatch from it’s chrysalis!
It allows the children to view part of the life cycle of the caterpillar and creates a beautiful extension of the book before the kids get to release the butterfly.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar has MANY ideas when it comes to learning, let me explain a few:
🐛 Days of the week sequencing
🐛 Sorting the fruits based on the days of the week, and counting up as you go
🐛 The life cycle of the butterfly
🐛 What happens if we eat too many sweets?
🐛 What are the ideal foods for a caterpillar?
🐛 What does a butterfly eat?
🐛 What’s the difference between a cocoon and chrysalis (and yes, I emailed Eric Carle because caterpillars that turn into a butterfly go into a chrysalis not a cocoon – but he just said that his caterpillar was special…)
🐛 Where do caterpillars live?
🐛 Where do butterflies live?
