This pack includes 2 sets of Build a Word Cards. One set focuses on alternative spelling patterns of UNACCENTED FINAL SYLLABLES and the other focuses on alternative spelling patterns of SYLLABLE JUNCTURES.
The hardest part of spelling in the English language is that we have so many variations of how to make each sound.
This resource is designed to show students the common alternate spellings for each sound. Use in conjunction with our Phonics Alternative Spelling Posters.
These activity cards include spelling patterns for these Unaccented Final Syllables
- ‘l’ sound – le, el, al, il
- ‘a’ sound – or, er, ar
- ‘n’ sound – en, on, in, ain
- ‘et’ sound – et, it, ate
- ‘ee’ sound – ey, ie, y
Students need to use their phonetic knowledge to sound out the word and then use their visual clues to choose the spelling pattern that is correct and check “Does it look right?” This step is imperative in spelling development. Each set is colour coded so that the child knows the sound they are looking for and are just focusing on which spelling pattern of the sound goes in the word.
The set for Syllable Junctures includes ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘f’, ‘g’, ‘l’, ‘m’, ‘n’, ‘p’, ‘r’, ‘s’, ‘t’ & ‘z’ sounds and is also colour coded for students to focus on the spelling pattern that the juncture should be.
