Mathematics Activity: Number Spinner

This @ikea_australia number spinner is ALWAYS a hit whenever I get it out in the classroom!

Here are some super simple differentiation ideas

🟣 Show if the number is odd or even: Transform number recognition into an exploration of odd and even concepts. With the IKEA Number Spinner, your child can spin and determine if the number shown is odd or even. This activity fosters number sense and introduces basic mathematical concepts.

🔵 Build to 10 or 20 from the number: Encourage your child to use the spinner as a starting point for building numbers. Spin the wheel and challenge your little one to construct the number shown using our Acrylic Numbers. This hands-on approach aids in developing number fluency and strengthens their understanding of place value.

🟢 Use the number for number of the day: Make numbers come alive with a “Number of the Day” activity. Spin the IKEA Number Spinner and let your child explore the chosen number in various ways. They can represent the number with our Acrylic Numbers, count objects to match the number, or even draw a picture that corresponds to the number.

🟡 Place Value exploration: Introduce place value using the spinner as a guide. Spin for a number, and together with your child, represent that number using base ten blocks. This activity reinforces the concept of place value and lays the foundation for more advanced mathematical understanding.

🟠 Fact Family fun: Enhance your child’s fact family knowledge with a spin! Spin the number wheel twice and guide your little one to create addition and subtraction equations using the two numbers generated. This activity strengthens number relationships and develops mental math skills.

🔴 Grouping and Multiplication: Bring the spinner and a dice together for an exciting multiplication activity. Roll the dice to determine the number of groups, then spin the number wheel to decide how many objects will be in each group. Your child can use the acrylic counters from the Acrylic Tens Frames to visualise and solve multiplication problems in a hands-on way.

Are there any other ways that you would use this?

Maths or Science are my faves for setting up play-based learning because they just lend themselves to hands-on!!

They also could be set up for a few weeks, allowing you time to observe your kids before having to change it!

Recognising if a word is real or nonsense is a rea Recognising if a word is real or nonsense is a really big part of reading development! But it’s so important that the words are decodable and target sounds and graphemes that the children are working on!

These Real or Nonsense Games are colour coded for easy differentiation (each colour is a phonics level CVC, CVCC etc) and I’ve made them in 6 different levels so they are perfect for a classroom with lots of different abilities!! My class LOVE them!

🌻 Name recognition.. this is great for kids who are ready for early letter formation
